Armed police descended on South Croydon last night after loud explosions from a burning car startled neighbours.
A red Audi, which is believed to have been stolen, was set alight in an alleyway to the rear of St. Augustine's Avenue just before 3am this morning.
An armed police unit quickly arrived at the scene after frightened neighbours reported the explosions, which were caused when the fire reached the gas struts in the boot of the car.
It is believed thieves set light to the car to destroy evidence. The wheels of the car were missing.
