On Saturday afternoon at Griffin Park, Brentford came up against Oldham Athletic - the Jordan of football clubs.
I’m talking about the pneumatic celebrity, of course, not the Arab state, as they were bloody dirty and intensely irritating.
Unsurprisingly for a team led by that nasty Scottish midget Paul Dickov, they kicked anything that moved, feigned injuries and were generally a pain in the Bees’ collective backside.
They won’t care though - they went back oop north with the three points and, while their approach may not have been pretty, it was damn effective. A clueless and outmuscled Brentford side simply had no answers.
I’ve been trying to keep positive during our disastrous start to the season. I’ve done my fair share of clinging to the odd glimmers of hope that have sparkled in our direction but after this latest in a truly hideous run of performances even my patience is starting to wear thin..
It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this, was it? Only a few months ago berks like me were bandying fanciful words like ‘promotion’, ‘play offs’ and ‘victory’ around like a politician making promises in the build up to an election.
And how hollow those words sound now. I’m not going to trawl through the depressing statistics that we have clocked up so far - I don’t want make myself cry - but even Stevie Wonder would be able to see that all is not well at Brentford.
A couple of weeks ago I said that Andy Scott should be given more time and I’m going to stick to that assessment.
The great job he has done up until this season has, in my opinion, earned him the right to keep his job and attempt to turn things around, but, after Saturday’s performance and his less than convincing post-match comments, I have to say alarm bells are starting to ring.
There is now a vocal faction among the Bees support who want a new manager in place asap. Although I don’t agree with them at the moment, these fans are entitled to their opinion and some of their criticisms of Scotty, it has to be said, are fair ones.
We are playing Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Saturday (Is it too early to call them relegation rivals?) and it is a game we quite simply must win.
Andy Scott knows he is in choppy waters and is promising to go “back to basics” and change the tactical approach in an attempt to turns things around.
For his sake, and ours, I’m hoping and praying to any God that will have me that whatever he does it works.
