From a Staines Town perspective, the events of Saturday’s game can be summed up in just one word – pants!
That is not just because the quality of entertainment was below par, or because all three goals were error-induced gifts, but its abiding memory was of Staines being refused permission to introduce sub Kayan Kalipha because his undies were the wrong colour!
Staines were showing signs of deflation from last week’s FA Cup exit and Dorchester almost capitalised when Danny Ings stole in after 10 minutes.
He had only Louis Wells to beat, and the Staines ‘keeper was dazzled by the low sun, but Ings found the side-netting.
André Scarlett shot just wide at the other end after clever play by Warren Harris, but Staines had another let-off when Ryan Moss charged down a clearance but was unable to find the unguarded net.
The game limped on scorelessly to half time, with Nick Crittenden for the visitors and Harris for Swans having the closest chances.
When Staines failed to cut out a 55th minute through-ball, Moss centred from a tight angle, for Ings to tap in from 12 inches.
But Staines levelled a quarter-hour later, the offside trap failing to spring when Leroy Griffiths’ through ball found Scarlett, who coolly slotted past Simon Evans.
Then came the pants moment, as Kalipha was forced to roll up his shorts for an underwear inspection, before finally being allowed on several minutes later.
But Dorchester had the last laugh, when Moss collected a long ball, sidestepped his marker, and beat the advancing Wells.
