We're going to Wembley!

A fantastic victory at Exeter City on Monday night saw the team book its place in the final of the Johnstone Paints Trophy (JPT) and April 3rd can’t come quick enough.

We can’t pretend the JPT is up there with the finals of the European Cup or even the FA Cup (a competition that has been more devalued than the Irish economy) and some cruel wags in the office have even suggested that this competition is more Mickey Mouse than Disneyland - but you try telling that to the Brentford players who will get to step out on the hallowed turf and the thousands of Bees fans who will be going potty in the stands.

The manner of our victories away at Exeter and at home to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday highlight why the Brentford board made the right call in showing Andy Scott and Terry Bullivant the door.

There was plenty of ill-informed criticism spouted in the wake of this decision by journalists and pundits who clearly hadn’t spent much time actually watching Brentford play so far this season.

Andy Scott did some magnificent things for this football club, not in the least saving us from Terry Butcher, and he has provided me with some of the all-time highlights of my time as a Bees supporter, but a change had to be made.

We obviously shouldn’t get carried away with a couple of wins but in these matches the Bees have played with a refreshing freedom and it has been a joy to watch them trying to play football in the right way.

A particular highlight of these last two games has been the sight of Richard Lee throwing the ball out to our fullbacks – I forgot that this tactic was actually permitted under the laws of association football, as it had long since been banished from our play by the previous regime.

Nicky Forster has brought a calming influence to the team and if things continue in this vein there may well be a groundswell of opinion calling for him to be given the job full-time.

Personally, I think we would still benefit from having Fozzy on the playing staff. For me the dream ticket would be Steve Coppell or Gary Johnson in as manager with Forster as player/coach. Though whoever comes in, as long as we keep on playing decent football I’ll be more than happy.
