Reggae artist Smiley Culture has died following a police raid on his home in Warlingham this morning.
David Emmanuel, 48, is believed to have stabbed himself during the raid.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating.
The singer, who became famous through chart hits Cockney Translation and Police Officer in the 1980s, was due to face trial for supplying cocaine at Croydon Crown Court.
It is believed officers were making a string of drugs-related raids on different properties during today's operation.
A police spokesman said: "As part of an ongoing operation officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Serious and Organised Crime Command today attended a residential address in East Surrey to make an arrest.
"While they were at the address, an incident occurred during which a 48-year-old man died.
"Officers from Surrey Police attended the incident and it has been formally referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission."
