Wills and Kate mania has officially hit Wandsworth.
With less than a month until the couple’s big day, Wandsworth is in the running to be crowned the most patriotic borough in London.
At the last count, Wandsworth Council had already received 64 applications for royal wedding street parties - and approved a whopping 55.
The borough’s biggest rival in the celebratory stakes is neighbouring Richmond, which has also received 64 requests from streets to cheer on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nuptials.
There have been more than 500 applications across London and many borough councils including Wandsworth have waived the normal £50 fee to close a road for a street party to get people behind the celebrations.
Resident Rachel Ford, 38, has organised a street party in Weybourne Street, Earlsfield, where neighbours will be putting on events throughout the day, including fancy dress competitions, a mini Olympics and a BBQ.
She said: “The reason why I wanted to have it was because I have great memories of Charles and Diana’s wedding.
“But we didn’t want it to be just about standing outside and drinking, so we thought we would have all these events.
“Everybody has been so positive about it and it will be a great chance for people who have never met before to get to know each other.”
A council spokesman said: “Clearly residents of Wandsworth have embraced the idea of hosting street parties to mark this royal occasion.
“We as a council have made everything as easy as possible by cutting red tape and bureaucracy and giving people a chance to come together and celebrate this event.”
