Prepare for an outbreak of red-blooded patriotism as residents and businesses prepare to celebrate this month’s impending royal wedding.

Prince William’s marriage to Kate Middleton on April 29 has inspired no less than 35 applications for street parties across the borough, 12 of which have already been approved after being given the green light by the emergency services.

But perhaps the biggest outpouring of nationalistic fervor to date has come from a small hair salon in Streatham Road, Mitcham, which last week adorned itself in Kate and Wills paraphernalia.

Its owner, Ralph Rozenbaum, said: “I just fell in love with the idea that a girl from a normal family has now the chance to become the Queen of the whole country. It’s amazing.

“I think it is so romantic and, because Mitcham can sometimes seem a dull area, it really spruces things up a bit.”

Wedding fever even infected a Wimbledon school on Tuesday, when an annual Easter egg decorating contest saw an entry with the happy couple depicted in ovular form.

Sue Tomes, headteacher at Wimbledon Chase Primary School, said: “The competition never fails to demonstrate the creativity and originality of the children and the entries this year, which also included the Wizard of Oz and Rapunzel, were particularly imaginative.

“[William and Kate] is a very topical entry and a fun way to wish the royal couple well, particularly since the children are looking forward to celebrating the royal wedding.”

What will you be doing on April 29? Are you organising or attending a street party?
