Merton FC have won promotion to the Southern Amateur League Division Two in the club’s 100th season.
It is only the second time in 52 years that the club, who play at Joseph Hood Recreation Ground in Morden, has achieved promotion.
Unbeaten in the league since November, their decisive result was a 1-0 win at third-placed Bank of England with top scorer Ashley Adams securing the only goal, which led to celebrations in Wimbledon Village long into the night.
Skipper Simon Clapperton said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for the club in its centenary year, and one which everyone associated with Merton FC can be rightly proud. It shows we are heading in the right direction as a club, and we hope all of our teams will achieve more landmark seasons like this one as we look forward to the next 100 years.”
