A disabled man from Tadworth completed the London Marathon last week in a wheelchair 28 years after he first ran it.
Brett Wainwright ran the London marathon in 1983, but after being paralysed from the chest down in an accident in 1989, returned this time to compete in his wheelchair in support of the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Mr Wainwright, who works for the Met Police answering 999 calls, completed the 26.2 mile marathon in 6 hours 22 minutes.
On choosing Starlight as his charity he said: “I want to 'pay back' a little of the kindness that was shown when friends raised money for me 20 years ago and chose Starlight in the hope that my efforts will help put a smile on a child’s face, despite the hardships he or she has to deal with.”
Money raised will go towards granting the wishes of hundreds of seriously ill children and provide entertainment in hospitals and hospices.
18 children in Surrey are currently waiting to have their wishes granted by Starlight.
