Friday’s Royal Wedding celebrations have given neighbours an excuse to break years of silence and forge friendships with each other.
Clare Short, who devised a street party with 200 guests in Camborne Road, Lower Morden, said the event has created a real sense of community in what had been a disparate group of residents.
With guests charged a “common sense” entry fee of bringing their own food and drink, the party featured a magician and a bouncy castle for children and an accordion player who helped entertain elderly visitors from a nearby Care Home.
Ms Short said: “The community spirit has come alive in our road and so the intention of the party has been well and truly accomplished.
“Twenty households in particular have really come together. People who only see each other on the bus or at the shops were actually talking to each other and making friends.
“All it takes is one person to spark it but it looks like things have really taken off because people are already talking about doing something similar for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.”
