A former Stringfellows disc jockey relived her former glory – albeit in digital music form - at her Royal Wedding street party.

Elaine Newton, who said she was a resident DJ at the central London haunt in the 1980s when “it was a nice club”, said over 200 guests helped raise thousands for charity at the party in Devas Road, Raynes Park.

Ms Newton, who admitted she still prefers using vinyl, said: “I was nervous at first but I think people really enjoyed because I’ve even had letters through my door from neighbours who have said how good the music was.

“The whole day was fantastic and special because it’s so rare to have an event like this which literally brings people together.

“It was moving enough watching the beautiful ceremony on TV, but it was also quite emotional seeing people get into the spirit of things. I’ve never seen anything similar in my lifetime.”

She added the money raised will be partially donated to the Wimbledon Guild, with some left over in a kitty for next year's celebrations of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The Devas Road party featured a fancy dress competition, in which children and adults donned the outfits of the happy Royal Couple, who were wed at Westminster Abbey on Friday.
