No customer records were damaged when an electrical fire broke out at a Kingswood-based insurance company last weekend when a firefighter received an electric shock.

A fire fighter from Epsom fire station was hospitalised after receiving an electric shock whilst he battled the blaze in an IT suite containing the IT server at Legal & General House in St Monica’s Road, Kingswood at 8.45pm, July 9.

The man was taken to Epsom hospital where he was kept in overnight for observation.

According to a spokesman for Epsom fire station, the fire was contained to the room but had spread after fire safety equipment in the room, designed to discharge carbon dioxide in case of fire, had not been triggered by smoke from the blaze.

But a spokesperson for Legal and General said: "Any safety features that were supposed to be there did work which is why the fire was contained to the electrical unit only.

"There was no damage other than to that unit and no customer records were damaged.

"Kingswood site was open for business as usual on Monday morning.

"Fortunately it was all contained to a small electrical unit which has already been replaced.

"We understand that a fire fighter received a small electrical shock but appeared to be unharmed.

"Hopefully the fire fighter has recovered."
