Sutton’s sporting heroes were crowned at an annual awards ceremony last week.
The Sutton Celebrating Sport Awards celebrates residents’ commitment to sport, from volunteers at grassroots level through to the borough’s Olympic 2012 hopefuls.
Among those to receive awards were team GB water polo player Matthew Holland, who won the Sutton Guardian sponsored award, Sportsperson of the Year.
The goalkeeper, who trains with Sutton & Cheam Water Polo Club, received his award from Sutton Guardian assistant editor Matthew Knowles.
The awards were given out at the Secombe Theatre on Thursday, July 14 at a ceremony shared with the borough’s medal winners from the recent London Youth Games.
Beverley Rand, Sutton Sports Development Officer, said: “The awards were a great success and celebrated all that is good about sport in Sutton, from the volunteers who give up their time to others, to our finest athletes.”
Among the Sutton residents to present awards were former Olympic boxing champion Bob Wells, and rising teenage boxing star and London 2012 hopeful Charlie Edwards.
