Scores of residents are set to attend a community picnic and fair, which organisers hope will pave the way for the return of the Sutton Green Fayre.

The event on Sutton Green will bring the local community together for a day of fun and games, including fairground stalls, arts and heritage activities.

All proceeds will go to local charities including Sutton Work Start, the Mayor’s chosen charity, which helps the borough’s 18-24 year olds into employment.

Organisers hope that the event will help bring back the traditional Sutton Green Fayre, which was held annually from the 1950s until the 1980s.

Attractions at the picnic will include traditional stalls and games such as Punch and Judy, apple bobbing, children’s novelty races and a cake stand.

Sutton’s archivists will be showing photographs and artefacts from Sutton’s past, and there will be a display of work by local artists.

Simon Honey will be using ‘eco-art’ made from reclaimed, recycled and natural materials to show how living a greener lifestyle can be easy and fun. He will be accompanied by the Eco-Art music group, who will be playing traditional family songs for a sing-along.

Now local ward councillors want to bring it back to the borough.

Councillor Marlene Heron, ward councillor for Sutton North, said: “The picnic promises to be great fun, with traditional stalls and games, entertaining activities and, most importantly, a chance to get to know some of your neighbours.

“Events like this can bring the whole community together, so, as well as being a great day out in its own right, we want to use the community picnic as a launching pad to bring back the Sutton Green Fayre.

”The picnic has something for everyone, so why not grab your picnic basket and come on down.£ The picnic will take place on Saturday from 2pm to 5pm, and residents need to bring their own picnics and rugs. The event is sponsored by Asda.
