A bread amnesty will be taking place in Priory Park next week where visitors will be able to swap their leftover loaves for a free bag of bird food to feed the ducks.
Reigate and Banstead Council is holding the event from Monday, July 25, to Friday, July 29, to celebrate Love Parks week, an annual campaign organised by parks charity Greenspace encouraging people to visit and support local parks.
Coun Adam De Save, Executive Member for Healthy Communities, said: "Priory Park attracts thousands of visitors every year and part of their enjoyment is feeding the ducks and swans at the lake.
Bread contains very little of the vital ingredients to provide wildfowl with the energy they need to breed and feed. It is like junk food - it tastes good but has no nutritional value.
The special food we will be supplying during Love Parks Week is much more nutritious for them."
Bread that is fresh and of the healthier multi grain variety is generally better for the birds' health.
Visitors can swap their bread at the park office inside the Pavilion between 9am - 5pm.
Outside of Love Parks weeks free bird seed is also available from the office.
The council also advises that dogs should be kept under control and are not allowed in the lake as this can disturb the wildfowl during the current nesting time and cause them to adandon their nests.
