A cricketer has been cleared of assaulting a man during an alleged match brawl.
Sharukh Mirza, the son of former mayor of Kingston Councillor Shiraz Mirza, was cleared by a jury at Kingston Crown Court this afternoon of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Earlier in the trial the court had heard how the match at Manor Park in Old Malden on July 25 last year turned into brawl when alleged insults and and a racist taunt turned into punches and blows with cricket bats.
Mr Mirza, 30, of Leatherhead Road, Chessington, was cleared of the charges when the jury delivered their verdict of not guilty. His teammate Mr Jaffery, 30, of Bensham Lane, Thornton Heath, will have to wait over the weekend to hear the result of his charge of unlawful and malicious wounding, which he denies.
