A grass skirt made at school caught fire last night in Kingston.
The blaze lit up a carpet and a duvet as the children were sleeping in their beds in Coombe Lane West.
A smoke alarm woke the family.
By the time New Malden firefighters arrived at about 1am, the fire was out.
The father had thrown the quilt out of the window, saving the house from catching alight.
The fire was believed to have been caused by a fallen over lamp.
Watch manager Steve Preston said: "It was a bit of a strange one.
"It just shows the importance of having a smoke alarm.
"It could have been a very different picture."
