A 43-year-old man has escaped with only minor injuries after being hit by a train.

Police rushed to Wandsworth Common rail station last night, July 25, after receiving a report that a man had been struck by a train.

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said: "The incident, which was reported at 7.59pm, was also attended by paramedics from London Ambulance Service, and the 43-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

"The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious."

James McDermott, from Kingston, was travelling on the train which hit the man. He said: "We were pulling away from the station when the train stopped suddenly. Several policeman ran past us to the front of the train and rumours started spreading that someone was on the tracks.

"It was all very confusing because no one told us anything for about 30 minutes. We assumed it was a suicide but it seemed like a strange place to do it.

"The train finally got moving again at about 8.30-8.45pm."

The train involved was the 19.45 London Victoria to Tattenham Corner service.

The line was handed back to Network Rail at 8.35pm.
