A Leatherhead-based animal welfare charity has slammed Surrey County Council for not doing more to prevent the closure of their only access road during this month's London Surrey Cycle Classic.

The Wildlife Aid Foundation, which has its veterinary hospital in Randalls Road, Leatherhead, needs access seven days-a-week for its staff, volunteers and emergency rescue vehicles.

The road is among the streets due to be closed off on August 14 for the cycling test event for next year’s Olympics - and on the weekend of 28/29 July 2012 for the Olympic Road Races themselves. The only access to the charity’s wildlife centre is from Randalls Road.

Simon Cowell MBE, Founder-Director of the Wildlife Aid Foundation, said: "We are extremely worried about these road closures.

"We have been trying to get Surrey County Council to take our concerns seriously but despite having spent the past three weeks trying to get definite answers from them about how they will guarantee access to our wildlife hospital on these days we have so far not got a satisfactory response.

"All they are willing to say at this stage is that it is their ‘intention’ to ensure the cycling events ‘don’t pose a risk to wildlife’. But frankly this is not good enough."
