A planned six-storey building in Wimbledon has been given the green light despite complaints it will resemble a “towering hairdryer”.
The development, set to feature nine flats and space for offices or shops, was approved by Merton Council’s planning committee last Thursday.
Plans for the site near the junction of Wimbledon Hill Road and Alwyne Road include a new wave-shaped six-storey structure with floor to ceiling blue-tinted glass on three of its sides.
The modern design would sit alongside the existing bank buildings – an ornate Jacobean-style terrace built in 1885 and featuring a former coach house.
Council officers called the scheme a “striking, high quality, bespoke design appropriate for its location”.
But Hillside Councillor Suzanne Evans said residents had labelled the new building a towering hairdryer.
