Scouts from across Kingston have been getting their hands dirty as they help investigate the borough’s past.
They have been helping the Kingston upon Thames Archaeological Society after they won a £28,400 Heritage Lottery grant to investigate a site on the Hogsmill River during the first week of August.
The week-long dig at the Southwood Scout Activity Centre in Tolworth focused on palaeoecology, which reconstructs the past environment through bore-holing and digging pits.
Records show no fewer than 13 mills, some producing gunpowder, existed along the river’s length over time, and it is hoped the project will help identify some of them.
The dig will help the scouts achieve their heritage badge, and the results will be displayed at Kingston Museum next spring.
