One of the fastest men on two wheels will whizz through the streets of Elmbridge this month.

Mark Cavendish, green jersey winner in the Tour de France, is in pole position to win Britain’s first gold medal at London 2012.

But, before that, he will soar through Surrey roads in the Olympic test race on Sunday, August 14.

Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey’s cabinet member for community services and the 2012 games, said: "It is absolutely fantastic news that Britain’s very own cycling superstar will be powering along Surrey’s roads to test the route for next year’s Olympic races.

"I’m sure Surrey fans will turn out in force to give the Manx Missile their support, just as they will next year when he goes for gold.

"All the effort we have put in behind the scenes to bring the men’s and women’s Olympic cycle races to Surrey will really start to turn into reality when Mark, his GB team-mates and a host of other stars head to the Cycle Classic start line.

"The test race is a key part of the preparations for those road races and we have been working hard with all the organisations involved to ensure its success while keeping disruption to a minimum."

The Cycle Classic starts at the Mall in London before crossing over Hampton Court Bridge into Surrey at 9.30am.

Racers will then pedal their way through Walton, Byfleet and Dorking before reaching Box Hill, passing through Leatherhead and Esher before crossing back over Hampton Court Bridge at 11.50am and back to the Mall finish line.

Road closures will be in place. Visit gosurrey.info/cycling/ for more information.
