A 74-year-old woman was left with a cut to her face and a double fracture to her left thumb after she tripped in Sutton High Street.

Daphne West, from Carshalton, said she fell on uneven paving outside BHS at about 1pm on July 11.

She was taken to hospital for treatment, and has spoken to a solicitor about taking legal action against the council over the fall.

Mrs West said she was shopping when the accident occurred. She said: "I tripped up on the paving, I fell to the ground. I started seeing stars when my face hit the ground."

A number of people are suing the council over accidents that have occurred since the controversial redevelopment of the high street was finished last year.

Several audits have exposed potential safety risks around features of the high street development.

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 1.25pm on July 11 to reports of an incident in Sutton High Street.

"We sent one ambulance crew to the scene and out staff treated one patient, reported to be an elderly woman, who was taken to St Helier Hospital."

Julie Turner, executive head of business services at Sutton Council, said: “We are sorry to hear about Mrs West’s fall and wish her a speedy recovery.

"We have not heard from Mrs West but if she contacts us we will of course investigate the circumstances of her accident."
