Streatham town centre is to receive more than £370,000 as part of efforts to boost the local economy.

Lambeth will be given £375,000 from the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund to develop the town centre, plus £310,000 to regenerate West Norwood district centre.

Lambeth is one of 20 London boroughs to receive a share of £10million to promote growth in its town centres.

Chairman of the Streatham Society, Brian Bloice, said he was generally supportive of previous development projects but said the money needed to be spent carefully.

He said: “I have seen many regeneration projects and every one help lifts the High Road. What we have to remember is the High Road is very historic. It has some extremely nice buildings.

"But one of the problems in the past is that a lot of this money has been frittered away."

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "Investing in our town centres and local areas is absolutely key to maintaining London’s position as the best big city in the world.

"This cash injection means councils can start work today to attract more people into their area, boost economic growth and bring the buzz back to their high streets."
