A teenage boy enjoyed a double celebration after his first book was published on his 13th birthday.

Martin Kyemba had written seven pages of his action story James Spark, when his mum Faith promised to do all she could to help get the story published.

Mrs Kyemba and her husband William were so proud of their son's achievement, they nominated him for a Croydon Champion award.

Unbeknown to them, Martin was so grateful for their support he had also nominated them for Parent of the Year.

The book is about an action hero named James who has special powers and has to battle against his enemies, which include his own relatives.

The book was published on July 12 and is already available on the Amazon and Tesco websites.

Martin finished writing the story in March, and days later Mrs Kyemba began researching possible publishers and emailing copies of the book's manuscript.

She said: "I sent loads of email out to publishers and about two weeks later someone came back to me. They said the story was good but needed some editing, which they would help with.

"The manuscript was edited, then submitted, and re-submitted after more comments, then finally it was published."

Martin, who has just finished year eight at Riddlesdown College, said: "It was amazing receiving the first copy of the book, especially as it was on my 13th birthday. It looks great, much better than most books I've read."

On his nomination form he wrote: "My mum and dad deserve the nomination, it took a lot of work. They supported me all the way, helped with editing and helped me to develop the story. Then they took over during the publishing process."

Mrs Kyemba said of the nomination: "It did take a lot of work, but it the support was worth it, we are so proud."

Every week we feature some of Croydon's heroes on this page and need your nominations. Nominees will be shortlisted and invited to an award ceremony in November.
