A plucky primary school teacher is preparing to set off on a 2,000-mile fundraising odyssey on his bike - dressed as "Super Cycling Man".
Will Hodson, a teacher at Brandlehow Primary School, in Putney, aims to travel from Tooting to Turkey - taking in 11 countries over 28 days - before flying home from Istanbul for the start of term next month.
The 32-year-old, from Trinity Road, Tooting, will set off on Monday and raise money for World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).
He said: "I’m setting off with just my bike and a rucksack and I’ll be wearing my Super Cycling Man costume the whole way.
"I’ll be doing just under 100 miles a day and going through a lot of countries I’ve never been to before and camping along the way. My main concern is that I hope the roads are okay but I’m sure it’ll be fine.
"The furthest I’ve been from home before is France really, when I raised money for WCRF with a cycle ride to Monaco dressed as a Roman gladiator.
"I’m not aware of any cultural barriers to men in superhero fancy dress on bicycles in any of the countries I’ll be visiting but I’m sure there will be some interesting reactions.
"Hopefully I’ll be asked what I’m doing and I’ll be able to tell people about the trip and get them to look at my website."
Mr Hodson has already secured nearly £1,500 in sponsorship for the challenge - and has previously raised more than £12,00 for the cancer prevention charity over the years through running and cycling challenges, including the London Marathon and the Great North Run.
Sian Fraser, events fundraiser at WCRF, said: “Will has done so many amazing things for us in the past and we’re very appreciative of his support. It is Will and people like him who provide the funds to pay for our vital research and education programmes.
“The scientists we finance study the links between cancer, diet and lifestyle while our education team promotes the message about cancer prevention - that about a third of the most common cancers could be prevented through maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active and following a healthy diet.
“We wish Will all the best on his epic voyage and hope he doesn’t have too many punctures.”
