False alarm was raised by a piece of metal thought to be an unexploded World War two bomb.

Kingston police were called to reports of the suspected bomb found in the garden of a house in Victoria Avenue, Surbiton at 2.30pm on Saturday, July 30.

A Kingston police spokesman said: “The Met's specialist unit that deals with explosives arrived on scene and upon examination declared the site safe.

“The object in the ground was believed to be a piece of metal.”

Former councillor Nick Kilby, who lives in nearby Maple Road, was cycling home at the time of the incident.

He said: “They closed down quite a reasonable chunk of Surbiton. There was no panic, just people milling around with absolutely no idea what was going on and lots of police.

“It’s absolutely hilarious that it was a piece of metal.”

Cordons around the junction of Upper Brighton Road and Victoria Road, Portsmouth Road and Brighton Road, Balaclava Road and Electric Parade and Endsleigh Gardens and Balaclava Road, were removed at 4pm.
