Breathtaking....now there is a word you don’t often associate with the style of football Brentford play.

Workman-like, resilient, organised, determined, professional, have all been churned out during the pre-season in the past.

But, breathtaking?

It was the word used by boss Uwe Rosler to describe Tuesday’s 6-1 win at Hampton & Richmond Borough and certainly every Bees fan will have little time to catch theirs if the current goalscoring form continues.

Brentford are averaging a goal every 11 minutes at the moment and they keep that up in League One they’ll have netted 376 by the end of the season. Phew!

Obviously, that is unrealistic but having seen the boys in action there is every reason for the most pessimistic fan to be looking forward to the start of the season.

Neat, slick, passing football was the order of the day at the Beveree.

And, while I know it was only Hampton and Tonbridge Angels, I must ask when was the last time Brentford beat anyone by ten goals or 6-1 for that matter.

Marcus Beans seems to have re-invented himself, Kevin O’Connor has extra bite in his tackles and Naill McGinn seems to be the transfer scoop of the season at any level.

The jury is still out on Clayton Donaldson until he has found the net, but his quality on the ball can not be ignored.

My only concern at this stage is the word ‘rotation’.

Many managers – Rafa the Gaffer for example – have fallen on that particular sword.

Benitez did win a European Cup, but the policy caused much discussion on Merseyside and certainly didn’t always sit well with the likes of Fernando Torres and Stevie G.

I may be sticking my neck out here, but, from the two teams Rosler put out on Tuesday, I would suggest there is little to choose between the first choice and squad players.

A good sign? Maybe. Or, has everyone just become average? Certainly not, on first glance. The competition for places in the starting line-up should have the desired effect providing Rosler can keep everyone happy.
