Officers from the Metropolitan Police's specialist shootings team Trident are investigating.
The shooting is understood to have taken place near Avro Way and Typhoon Way on the Roundshaw Estate.
One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "It happened quite late last night so no one is really sure what happened.
"A friend of mine, who used t be in the army, heard a noise last night and was certain it was a single gunshot.
"There were a couple of police cars in Avro Way this morning."
