Police have charged four men after violence at a football match between Crystal Palace and rivals Brighton and Hove Albion.

They are accused of a range of crimes, including threatening behaviour, assault and possessing drugs.

Eleven more people remain on bail while police investigate clashes on the night of the match in Brighton on September 27.

About 200 police officers took part in the operation to keep the peace after fans gathered in West Street and Queen’s Road, Brighton, from as early as 11am, facing off with each other and with police as the evening wore on.

Clashes were also reported on a train at Lewes railway station and at Brighton station.

Shaun McGarry, 47, a builder of Waddon New Road, Croydon, is accused of assault by beating and possession of cannabis and is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on November 25.

Daniel Rhodes, 37, a decorator of Lynne Court, Birdhurst Road, South Croydon, has been charged with assault by beating and is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court on December 2.
