Thieves have been plundering the Westcroft leisure centre under the cover of darkness just two weeks after it closed for refurbishment.
The Westcroft leisure centre, Westcroft Road, Carshalton closed for works on October, 24, for a year.
Early on the morning of Monday, November 7 police were called to the centre to reports of a man acting suspiciously on the building site.
A man was arrested at the scene.
The following morning on November 8, police were called again to the leisure centre and found 30 metres of electrical wiring had been stolen.
The suspects are unknown and no arrests have been made as yet.
It has also been reported that there has been thefts involving the steel gate post and metal railings but these are yet to be confirmed.
One eye witness reported an incident on November 10 while she was walking her dog next to the centre.
She said: “All the lights in the main building were out and torch lights were moving about inside.
“We called the police because we had no idea what people would be doing inside there at 6.30pm.
“There was certainly stuff going in and out under the guise of torchlight.”
