A self proclaimed animal lover has been banned from having pets for two years after his "emaciated" dog was found wandering the streets.

Gary Walsh, 44, was given a three month community order and will have to wear an electronic tag for three months after being found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to his Staffordshire bull terriers.

Walsh, of Peterborough Road, Carshalton was charged in March this year after his Staffordshire bull terrier was found "grossly underweight" in Carshalton shortly after giving birth to nine puppies.

Croydon Magistrates Court heard today (November 15) how the bitch, Jessie "appeared skeletal" and was lactating when she was taken to kennels after being found in the street.

Walsh, who told the court he had given five of the puppies away, had got in touch with the kennels and Police promptly search his address, where they found four underweight puppies.

At the trial on Monday, Walsh gave up responsibility for Jessie, who the court heard was his companion as he was a single man.

Walsh had a "simplistic outlook" and believed he was looking after his pets adequately, the court heard.

The court heard from the defence how Walsh's crimes were committed more out of ignorance than cruelty.

Walsh will have to wear an electronic tag and remain in his house between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am for three months.

Head Magistrate Mrs Marian Down ordered Walsh to pay £200 towards the veterinary bill.
