Children screamed with delight as Santa Claus and a lion began the countdown to Christmas with the festive lights switch on.

Roving performers including a twinkling Christmas tree and two skating baubles entertained the thousands of people who swarmed to Kingston town centre for the event.

Shanta Bhagwandin from Kingstonfirst said she thought there were about 60,000 people in the crowd but official numbers were still to come.

She said: “It’s all been a bit of a blur but I was looking down the street and I just saw a sea of faces. I think it’s probably the best one so far, there’s something for everyone.”

Whiffs of mulled wine, candy floss and roasting sausages drew visitors to the Ancient Market Place which was turned into a traditional Christmas Market for the festivities which began at 3pm on Thursday, November 17.

The lights switch on was hosted by Radio Jackie, Chelsea FC’s mascot Stamford the Lion, Father Christmas and the Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Patrick Codd, in Clarence Street at 6pm.

Emily Small from Kingston attended the event with her two daughters, aged three and six.

She said: “It’s just fantastic, we came last year but the kids love it, it’s such a good way to start Christmas and there’s a great family atmosphere.”

Memorial Gardens was transformed into a kid’s kingdom, including a nativity farm with sheep, pigs and lamas, face painting stalls and a penalty shoot out challenge all accompanied by music from Borough Brass.

The Bentall Centre hosted superheroes and dancing penguins from Happy Feet 2 and singers from Maple Infants, Hampton Infants, Tolworth Junior, St Andrew’s and St Mark’s and Grand Avenue primary school entertained visitors in the Market Place. All Saints church held a short carol service at 5pm, while the annual Eden Craft and Gift Fair open its doors in a marquee on the church lawns.

Kingstonfirst chief executive Ros Morgan said: “It’s my first year in Kingston and it’s been fantastic. There’s a really good community spirit. All the stores joined in so all in all it’s been really good.”
