Plans to redevelop a disused site opposite East Putney Tube Station were approved last night by Wandsworth Council’s planning applications committee.

The scheme, which will create 170 jobs, will involve pulling down the outdated office buildings at 84-88 Upper Richmond Road and replacing them with 148 new homes alongside new shop, business, café, restaurant and leisure space.

Thirty-four apartments will be set aside as affordable homes for local residents and children’s play areas would also be created alongside a new outdoor public space for community events.

Wandsworth Council’s planning chairman Councillor Nick Cuff said: “This tired, empty office complex is the first thing people see when they step out of East Putney Station.

"The scheme will bring a disused brownfield site back into use and comes with a hefty contribution towards smartening up the station."

As part of the planning consent the developer will contribute more than £1million towards local infrastructure upgrades including improvements to East Putney Tube Station and the adjacent railway bridges.

A mature London Plane Tree on the Upper Richmond Road frontage will also be retained.
