Heartwarming tributes have been made to a family man who was killed in a motorbike crash last weekend.

Chris Hitchings, a 40-year-old husband and father of two children Streatham, died from multiple injuries on Saturday, November 12, a post-mortem examination confirmed.

He had crashed his black Honda motorcycle into a lamppost at 12.35pm in Stanford Road, Norbury, between Mitcham and Streatham.

He leaves behind his children, Kian and Ethan, and his wife, Meeta Hitchings, who told the Streatham Guardian this morning: "Chris was liked by everyone and that goes without saying when you look at the kind words said about him."

Mrs Hitchings said her husband had "touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to meet him" and has set up a JustGiving website page for people to contribute to a charity for which Mr Hitchings was volunteering.

To contribute visit: justgiving.com/chrishitchings.

She added: "He volunteered for Gwalior Children's Charity at its Annual Gala night in July 2011. We have therefore chosen this charity to contribute towards so that Chris's legacy lives on.

"The charity helps improve the lives of poor, orphan and disabled children in one of the poorest regions in India."

On a Facebook page set up in Mr Hitchings's honour, dozens of people have paid their respects to a "fine example of a family man."

Ross Richardson said: "I don't recall a single time I met Chris when we weren't smiling about something or other.

"Meeta, Ethan and Kian, my thoughts are with you constantly throughout this desperately sad time.

"If a man can be judged by his family alone then Chris was a fine man."

Metropolitan police officers are continuing their investigation into what happened and are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information.

Officers believe Mr Hitchings may have lost control of causing him to hit the lamppost, but are urging witnesses to call 020 8941 9011 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
