A jury has been played police control room dialogue from a chase that ended with a teenager fatally crashing a stolen car.

PC John Wills was reporting as the blue Mazda, stolen in Merton by Liam Albert, 17, reached speeds of 80, 90, then 110mph on the A3.

The inquest at Woking Corner’s Court on November 17 listened to PC Wills’ account of flying through the Scilly Isles roundabout at 90mph.

The transcript between the police car and control room took place on July 8, as car-mad Mr Albert tried to escape police between New Malden and Esher, where the car finally collided with a Daewoo in Lammas Lane.

At one point in the recording, PC Wills was heard to say: “He’s crashed it. Lost, lost.”

Acting Inspector Warren Pash, a police driving instructor at Hendon driving school with 29 years’ experience, said a number of factors would be considered before a police pursuit was called off.

Those would include the manner of driving, the weather and the risk to police in pursuit, members of the public and the subject of the pursuit itself.

He told the inquest that quick decisions were needed at high speed, to weigh up their duty of care to themselves and the driver, against their duty to uphold the law.

Acting Insp Pash said: “In my experience, if someone fails to stop for you, it is usually an indication that they’ve committed an offence.

“I’ve never had someone not stop for me just because they’ve been speeding.”

He said the police vehicle and the officers driving it were both as qualified as they could be. The inquest continues.
