Fire crews from Croydon and Purley were called to a blaze at a derelict building last night.

Six pumps were called to the building in Peaks Hill, Purley, at around 7pm yesterday evening.

One person remains unaccounted for, but firefighters are unable to start searching the building after part of the roof collapsed.

All fire crews have been withdrawn from the site because of the dangerous structure.

The two floor building, which used to be part of The John Fisher School, measures five metres by 10 metres and has been badly damaged in the blaze.

Fifty percent of the first floor is gutted and 75 percent of the roof badly damaged and all fire crews have been withdrawn because of the dangerous structure.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: "We sent six pumps, two aerial appliance monitors and two jets to the scene.

"One pump remains at the scene ready to deal with odd hot spots and damping down once the structure is safe."

The cause of the fire in not yet known.
