An electrical fault sparked a blaze in the engine of a car.

Firefighters were called to Blakes Lane in New Malden where a motorist had pulled over after smoke started billowing from the car’s engine.

The fire destroyed the Peugeot’s engine and most of the front of the car, which was carrying a ladder on its roof.

Firefighter Michael Dawkins, from New Malden’s Green Watch, attended the scene at 4.30pm on Tuesday, November 22.

He said: “It was an electrical fault. He was going along the road when it started to smoke and he pulled up. He parked up and the whole engine went alight.

“Just one machine with five of us attended and there were no injuries.”

The road was closed while the firefighters extinguished the blaze but was re-opened by about 5.15pm.
