An adventure playground under investigation after a disabled child’s accident has been closed because of overrunning building works, parents have been told.

Ofsted said they would investigate the Acacia Intergenerational Centre in Grove Road, Mitcham, after 15-year-old Ciara Lewington suffered serious internal bleeding after falling off a rope bridge while under supervision.

Her mother, 40-year-old Lorraine Lewington who lives in Bond Road, formally complained after care workers did not tell her about the injury until more than a week later.

Last week, Mandy Lawson from Merton Council notified users of the centre that the adventure playground would be closed until the middle of December due to “scheduled building works at the playground having overrun”.

Mrs Lewington said it was a “strange coincidence” that the playground’s closure coincided with the Ofsted investigation, which she was told was due to finish by December 15.

A spokeswoman from Merton Council said: “Works were originally planned to replace the floor in the indoor activity area between October 31 and November 4.

“The works are taking longer than predicted and we hope to have the new floor completed before Christmas.”
