A wine bar’s contested bid to hold a 25th birthday party has been withdrawn.

Kingston police had objected on the temporary event notice at Xzyte in Claremont Road, formerly Corky’s, on the grounds that it would undermine crime prevention.

The police’s objection was based on concerns over underage drinking, a claim later denied by the bar.

Police stated officers been called to the club early in the morning in September where a large group of drunk 16 and 17-year-olds had been fighting and throwing bottles.

It was claimed a drunk 16-year-old had pointed to Corky’s and said the group had been drinking there.

The application, which would have seen the bar open until 1.30am on November 27, was withdrawn at the start of a Kingston Council licensing hearing on Thursday, November 17, after the bar’s owner said there had been a mix-up over dates for the meeting.

Speaking to the Surrey Comet, after the meeting Robert Hedley denied serving underage drinkers and said the girl who claimed it was her birthday was not the same one he had dealt with.

He blamed the problems on uninvited underage guests who heard of the parties on Facebook.

He said: “I totally deny that. They come to Surbiton and if anything is going on Facebook the kids do put it around.”
