A public consultation on introducing residents parking schemes has just been launched following claims that parking is out of control in Epsom and Ewell.

A review began in March 2011 following demand from residents, police, councillors and highway officers with 150 requests for residents parking schemes received.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Alison Kelly for town ward said: "To say parking is out of control in Epsom is an understatement. “On Wednesday November 23 the police were on the hump-backed bridge in Church Road directing traffic because of parked cars which were creating an incredibly dangerous situation. “It seems that anywhere which doesn't have parking controls is up for grabs by all-day commuters, no matter how serious an obstruction they cause and how dangerous it is to park there.

“Coun Taylor called for double yellow lines in this location over a year ago".

Residents parking schemes (RPS) have been proposed for Adelphi Road, Chalk Lane, Hawthorne Place, Kingston Road, Ladbroke Road, Providence Place, Rosebank, Delaporte Close, Church Road, Beaconsfield Place, Heathcote Road, Hereford Close, Laburnam Road and The Parade.

Twenty roads have been removed from the consultation process following the review including Hazon Way, Maidenshaw Road, Horsley Close, Lintons Lane, Middle Lane, Stones Road and Wyeths Road.

Conservative Councillor, Darren Dale, for Stoneleigh ward, said: "Parking in Epsom is in need of better enforcement.

"There are a number of small areas out there that need to be reviewed but hopefully with a public consultation and public engagement we can get a better idea of what needs to be done, where it needs to be and done and to make sure the businesses in Epsom don't suffer and that the residents are taken care of." The consultation will run for four weeks and will end on December 22.

Plans will be available to view at Epsom Town Hall, Epsom Library, Bourne Hall Library and Ewell Court Library and online at surreycc.gov.uk.
