Staff at St George's Hospital and South Thames College will be striking on Wednesday over a national pensions row.

Hospital workers will be on strike from 8am to closing time at St George's Hospital, in Blackshaw Road, Tooting.

St George's Hospital said they will issue a statement on Monday, but have confirmed the hospital will be open during the strike.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) at South Thames College are also participating in the strike in a row over changes to the teacher's pensions scheme.

College staff will be on picket lines from 8am to 11am at the campus in Wandsworth High Street, before joining a rally outside Wandsworth Town Hall.

Pickets will also be held at the campus in Tooting High Street from 8am to 10.30am.

UCU branch organiser Angie Birtill said: "The government propose to make us work longer, contribute more and get less, despite our pension fund being in surplus.

"We are standing up for justice and fairness on November 30. We are not prepared to stand for an economic crisis we did not create." A spokesperson for the college said it will be open as normal during the strike.

A rally will be taking place outside Wandsworth Town Hall, supported by Battersea and Wandsworth Trade Union Council.

Participants will then assemble in Lincoln's Inn Fields in central London before joining a national march to Victoria Embankment.

Schools are expected to issue relevant news alerts to parents on the impact of the strikes.

Councillor Kathy Tracey, Wandsworth Council’s education spokesman, said: “I would urge headteachers and their staff to do everything possible to avoid going through with this industrial action.

"The disruption to pupils’ learning is something I am sure none of us want to see."
