One thousand tonnes of food waste has been collected in the first nine weeks since a new recycling scheme was launched in Croydon.
Council officers predict every 1000 tonnes of waste prevented from going to landfill will save the council £80,000 in tax.
The council hope to save about £600,000 over the course of a year.
Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for highways and the environment said: “I’m delighted that we’re very clearly on track to achieve what we set out to do - save money for local people and protect the environment for generations to come.”
New bin collections were rolled out at the start of October but hit problems immediately with 3000 homes failing to receive the correct schedule information.
Fortnightly waste collections were introduced, with a weekly collection of food waste.
