A brave woman has fought off an armed robber demanding money from her newsagents.

The woman was confronted by a man with a knife in Corner Shop, Ruskin Road, Carshalton at around 5pm on Tuesday, November 22 but managed to fight him off.

The man produced what appeared to be a kitchen knife from under his coat after his bank card was declined at the counter when paying for a packet of 20 cigarettes.

He moved behind the counter at which point the shop assistant grabbed his arm which was holding the knife.

The man said: “Give me the money and I won’t hurt you.”

However, another customer walked in and the suspect ran out of the shop.

Police have put out a plea for any information on the suspect who is described as a white male aged about 40-45, 5ft 7in tall and of medium build.

He was wearing a dark coat, green jumper and blue jeans. He had a scarf wrapped around the bottom of his face and was wearing a black beanie hat.
