Merton’s fatal road accident hot spot is Raynes Park town centre, new statistics show.

Five people were killed in accidents on the streets around Raynes Park station between 2000 and 2010, police data reveals.

The figure is higher than for any other urban centre in Merton.

Those killed in the area included a male pedestrian in his 70s, who died in 2009, as well as a 37-year-old pedestrian and three drivers or vehicle passengers.

The number of deaths in other Merton town centres over the period were one in Colliers Wood, two in Mitcham, two in Wimbledon and two in Morden – where an 82-year-old female pedestrian was killed in 2000.

The statistics were compiled by the police and published by mapping company ITO World to mark world day of remembrance for road traffic death victims on Monday.

They recorded 40 deaths on Merton’s roads throughout the decade.

The oldest victim was a 92-year-old man killed in Commonside East, Mitcham, in 2003, and the youngest a two-year-old car passenger killed near Ravensbury Park in Morden in 2002.
