Shop owners have pledged to help customers with late-night openings in the run up to Christmas.
Traders in Wimbledon Village said they were “taking a stand” against a recent Merton Council decision to reduce short-term free parking outside shops from a maximum of 20 to 10 minutes.
From last Thursday (November 24) to December 22, 26 shops in the village will open later than usual on Thursday evenings – meaning customers can park for free.
Earlier this month, the council's head of regeneration policy, Councillor Andrew Judge, said: "In light of the severe financial situation the council is facing, unfortunately the council can no longer afford this difference for the Village and Arthur Road.
"I appreciate fully that shops in all areas need as much support as they can get. However, on balance the difference in cost per person parking (30p-45p) will be minimal."
