Plans for a world class running track and football pitch to be built at a Coulsdon school have been given the green light.

Woodcote High School teamed up with the South London Harriers for the project Track Coulsdon, which will see an eight-lane athletics track and football pitches built on the school's playing fields.

Despite concerns about traffic, noise and light levels being raised by residents living near-by, nine out of ten councillors voted in favour of the plans.

The South London Harriers are financing the build in return for the school, in Meadow Rise, providing the land.

Last week it was announced the project will receive £200,000 from the Mayor of London Sports Legacy Fund.

Brian Cakebread, chair of Governors at the school said: "We now have 75 percent of the funding and hope by the first quarter of next year to have 100 percent.

"This is not a stadium, it is a third level training facility. It will be the first track in over 20 years that will have beenbuilty in London outside of the Olympic Village."

The track, which is expected to be built over the next 12 to 18 months, will be used by the school during the day and the South London Harriers in the evening.

There are also plans for the facility to be available for use by the community.

Headteacher Mark Southworth, said: "It is brilliant. It's going to be a brilliant contribution to the Olympic legacy. Ours will begin as the Olympics finish.

"We will also use it to look forward to the World Athletics Championships in 2017."
