It will be 'business as usual' at Epsom and Ewell Borough Council tomorrow, despite the threat of staff walking out in the biggest public sector strike for a generation.

Two million public sector workers are expected to walk out across the country tomorrow (November 30) in a row over pension funds. Picket lines are expected to form at Epsom Town Hall and Epsom Hospital, however the number of staff taking part is still unclear.

However Epsom and Ewell Council is confident their services will not be affected.

A spokesperson said: “It is business as usual at Epsom and Ewell Borough Council as we are aware of very few employees taking part in the forthcoming strike action.

"There will be no impact on the delivery of our services.”

A spokesperson for Surrey County Council said: “This is a national dispute between unions and the Government.

“It is not a dispute between staff and Surrey County Council. Nonetheless there will be an impact on county council services although we will try to keep this to a minimum.”

County council services such as community recycling centres, libraries, adult social care and children’s care are expected to be largely unaffected.

Surrey Fire and Rescue will also be unaffected.

However with 30 public sector unions, including teachers unions the NUT, ATL and NASWUTT striking 190 schools across Surrey will be disrupted.

In Epsom and Ewell 11 schools in Epsom and Ewell will be closed and four partially closed.

Some staff at Epsom Hospital are also expected to strike.

Earlier this week director of nursing at Epsom Hospital, Pippa Hart said: “Our absolute priority is, and always will be, to provide our patients with a high level of care.

“As such, we have been engaging with all of our staff - including doctors, nurses, healthcare support workers, pharmacists, radiologists and our administrative staff - to make sure that we can continue to provide a safe service whatever the circumstances.

“We have robust contingency plans in place to ensure that, should strike action take place on 30 November, we are fully prepared to continue our work with minimal disruption to services.

“If we do need to reschedule any appointments, we will contact patients directly.”

A mass rally is being held in Leatherhead with Unison members assembling outside Red House Grounds Park off Station Road at 10.00am, marching to Leatherhead Theatre on Church Street to rally at 11am.
