A former leader of Merton Council will take on the role of mayor next year.
Conservative councillor David Williams is set to replace current mayor Gilli Lewis-Lavender as the borough's first citizen next spring.
Coun Williams was first elected to the council in 1974 and represents Hillside ward in Wimbledon.
He was leader of the council from from 2006 to 2010 also sits as a JP at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court.
The mayor elect is a former pupil of Hatfeild primary school in Morden, and is currently a member of St Martin's church in Lower Morden.
He said: "It will be a particular honour to serve as mayor during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Olympics."
