A young mum has accused a bus driver of failing to help or apologise after her toddler son's legs got trapped in a double-decker's doors.

Suzie Cane and one-year-old son Leo were alighting from a number 270 bus on Putney Bridge on November 20 when the incident happened.

As the 20-year-old left the bus, wheeling her buggy backwards down the steps, the double decker's doors closed on Leo's legs.

A horrified Ms Cane, from Wimbledon, shouted at the driver, pleading with him to open the doors.

The driver pulled the lever to open the door and frightened Leo's bruised legs were released.

Realising her son had narrowly avoided serious injury, Ms Cane went to remonstrate with the driver and banged on the closed door in order to speak to him.

To her disgust the driver simply drove off in the direction of Putney Bridge station where the route terminates.

Ms Cane said: "I had one half of the buggy on the pavement and one half on the bus when the doors suddenly closed.

"My son started crying and I shouted at the driver but he just drove off.

"He didn't get out to see if Leo was alright, or even ask me if we were ok. Fortunately he only has some bruising and wasn't more seriously injured.

"The driver's behaviour was completely disgraceful. If he had just apologised to us, I wouldn't have taken the issue any further.

Unable to pursue the bus, Ms Cane noted down the registration number and informed travel website FixMyTransport.com who in turn told the Wandsworth Guardian.

A spokesman for Go Ahead, who run the Capital's buses, said CCTV from the bus was being reviewed.

She said: “We are very concerned about the initial incident when the child was trapped in the doors of the bus and the subsequent manner as to how it was dealt with.

“We do take any instances of this nature very seriously indeed and always undertake a full investigation. As is our normal procedure, the driver was interviewed and the appropriate disciplinary action has been taken, however, the nature of this action must remain confidential.

“We would like to offer our sincere apologies to Ms Cane for any distress caused.”
